The designation FF-OB/ZB stands for "Field telephone, local battery/central battery operation". The unit consists of a fiberboard box with a flap under which the connections, handset and other accessories are housed. As an optional accessory, there is a plug-on dialing attachment that allows operation on a trunk line or on a private branch exchange.<br />
An exchange cord and a battery extension cable, both housed in the device cover, are supplied with the device as accessories. The battery extension cable can be used at particularly low temperatures to stow the battery in the hopefully warm trouser pocket to prevent an unwanted discharge.<br />
The handset is not a simple telephone handset. The handset has a button that turns on the microphone when pressed. When placed on the housing cover, this button safely separates the microphone from the earpiece to prevent unintentional eavesdropping. This russion fieldphone came in service 1950. It was produced in large numbers and used by the Soviet Army and numerous other armed forces. In addition, it was used in disaster control, railroads and mining. One interesting thing about it is that its Power was supplied by a built-in GB-U-1.3 (ГБ-10-У-1.3) lead-acid battery with a nominal voltage of ten volts and a capacity of 1.3 ampere-hours. The fourth Easterhegg for the Chaosvermittlung (Chaos Field Phone Exchange).<br />
This time we only used our own wiring, as using the house wiring was not possible for it was mainly glas. One highlight were the 4 telephones on the sixth floor which were also directly wired via 800m spools. Even though the Event was very dispersed (with the hackcenter divided in 3 parts and beeing on the ground floor and the party and breakfast area being on the sixth floor) the usage of our phones was pretty low. Also there were no private fieldphones of any hackerspaces this time. Because of one of our endpoints beeing named "Sonnendeck" a lot of other endpoints got named after things in the song "Sonnendeck" by "PeterLicht". All Endpoints had a piece of paper stating the direction of the next fieldphone and how its called.<br />

The third Easterhegg for the Chaosvermittlung (Chaos Field Phone Exchange).<br />
This time we had a nice set up with public field telephones and some custom end points. All connections within the Hackcenter used direct wiring, beyond that, tunneling through in house wiring was involved. Several spare lines to multiple points in the Hackcentre were deployed for potential "custom" connections. View were actually used, We started to mark public phones with our new yellow/black post markers (see images below) to build up "corporate identity". Due to the change in POC (DECT) infrastructure, we no longer got analogue phone lines to connect to them. This was replaced by a SIP FritzBox setup, that provided tree analogue lines for DECT interconnectivity. <br />
The usage of the field phone system was very low. The reason for this was partially, that most phones were in visible / hearing distance. Lesson learned: Austrian field telephones are not ideal as public phones, as their ring sound does not register as "a telephone is ringing" with uninitiated users. Most active work was done explaining the system and demonstrating the operation. As spreading the knowledge and awareness is one of the goals of participating at such events, this is considered a success. Feedback up to now has always been very positive and rewarding. However, we have to work on the operator coverage for future events, to increase the reliability of the service. <br />

We aim at providing field phone infrastructure at certain events of the Chaos Computer Club or similar. We partly claim the right of the uninitiated and set out to discover this fascinating technology in our own way. We use it as a play ground for experimentation and combine it with the technical toys of our days.<br/><br />
Although the name is German, we are not limited by that. Everyone is welcome to participate in any form.
