Mirwi: Typo fix in explanation.

At the GPN16 the plan was to put field phones in all lecture halls, close to the speaker desks. To be allowed to do so, the requirement was that these phones should not disturb any lectures by loud ringing. So the phones were silenced (TODO: link to description) and equipped with the optical ring indicator described below, before deployment.

The circuit is shown in the schematic above. The diode D2 rectifies the positive portion of the input ringing voltage and charges up the capacitor C3. Of course the negative portion could have been used equivalently, with the diode in correct polarity connected to the negative side of C3. The maximum peak voltage observed at C3, with heavy cranking at a field phone, was about 150V. As a second stage, the capacitor C1 is now "slowly" charged form C3 trough the resistor R1. Voltage at C1 will rise until the base voltage of Q1, generated from C1 voltage through the divider formed by R2 and (R3+R8), is high enough to make Q1 conduct and turn on M1. The moment M1 turns on, there is a significant amount of current that starts flowing through the LED D1 and R8. The now present voltage drop over R8 will additionally feed the base of Q1 and ensures that it stays conducting until the LED current has subsided. C1 will quickly discharge into the LED, making it flash very briefly, for about 2ms, but with high brightness. When C1 voltage has fallen and the LED current has also decreased, Q1 is no longer conducting and M1 also will return to non conducting mode. As long as there is still enough charge in C3, C1 is again charged up via R1 and the next led flash is initiated. The time required for C1 charge up will increase with falling C3 voltage. This results in a continuously slowing down flashing of the LED.
<br />

The whole circuit is simulated using LTSpice. The results are shown in the two graphs above. On complete one, where the LED slow down is nicely visible, and a zoom of a single LED flash, where the rapid decrease of LED (D1) current becomes obvious.

The measurement results of the actual built units match pretty well with the simulation. The voltage across R8 is perfectly suited for monitoring the LED current with an oscilloscope...
The third Easterhegg for the Choasvermittlung (Chaos Field Phone Exchange).
This time we had a nice set up with public field telephones and some custom end points. All connections within the Hackcenter used direct wiring, beyond that, tunneling through in house wiring was involved. Several spare lines to multiple points in the Hackcentre were deployed for potential "custom" connections. View were actually used, We started to mark public phones with our new yellow/black post markers (see images below) to build up "corporate identity". Due to the change in POC (DECT) infrastructure, we no longer got analogue phone lines to connect to them. This was replaced by a SIP FritzBox setup, that provided tree analogue lines for DECT interconnectivity.
The usage of the field phone system was very low. The reason for this was partially, that most phones were in visible / hearing distance. Lesson learned: Austrian field telephones are not ideal as public phones, as their ring sound does not register as "a telephone is ringing" with uninitiated users. Most active work was done explaining the system and demonstrating the operation. As spreading the knowledge and awareness is one of the goals of participating at such events, this is considered a success. Feedback up to now has always been very positive and rewarding. However, we have to work on the operator coverage for future events, to increase the reliability of the service.

Deployed material:
* 1 30-connection exchange
* 1 Analoge Telephone (3-connections via SIP) exchange
* 11 field telephones
* very roughly 200 meter multicore-line with (3-4 twin-wires) and 200 meter field wire

* 1 30-connection exchange
* 1 Analoge Telephone (3-connections via SIP) exchange
* 11 field telephones
* very roughly 200 meter multicore-line with (3-4 twin-wires) and 200 meter field wire

Provided Services
By now, this can be considered our "standard" services:
* DECT Call-in/-out
* Speaking Clock
* Conference Call
* Line Hold Music
* "Bohnen as a service", which was introduced at EH17, is still available.

End points
* WARP ZONE
* CCC-AC
* F3L
* Kids space
* smoking area
* Lounge
* 4x public phone in Hackcenter
* CERT (until deactivated because of misuse :-( )
The second Easterhegg for the Choasvermittlung (Chaos Field Phone Exchange). We set up a basic field phone configuration and had the DSL service in real use for the first time - with great success!
Deployed material:
* 1 30-connection exchange
* 1 Telephone (4-connections) exchange
* 1 8-port DSLAM
* N1 field telephones
* N2 meter backbone (multicore-line with 3-4 twin-wires) and N3 meter field wire

Provided Services
This year we've provided a lot more services than last year:
* DECT Call-in/-out
* Speaking Clock
* Conference Call
* Line Hold Music
* The unused player channel which was originally intended for adult services was converted to play the "Bohnen as a service" sound late in the event.

End points
(incomplete list)
* CCC-AC
* Front door (smoking area)
* Foyer
* 2x outside
* 2x camp ground (including DSL!)
* 1x close to camp ground
* Lounge

While the operator is busy handling the current traffic, additional incoming calls can be deferred to special "line hold music" channels.

This feature was introduced at the Gulaschprogrammiernacht 2016. It was implemented by using an old MP3 player and the additional hardware described here. By separating the left and right audio channels in hardware and combining it with a specifically crafted audio file, a single player can provide two independent music channels.

For the 33c3 the same functionality was integrated in the "special services box". There, the MP3 player is replaced by a RaspberryPi (1st gen, model B) and a USB sound card, using the same audio files than the previous GPN set up.
Equipment used:
* 1x 30-connection exchange
* 1x 10-connection exchange
* 1x Telephone (4-connections) connection box
* about 15 field telephones deployed
* about 400 meter field wire (t.b.c.)

Special Services
Of course there is a field telephone system as such! But we had two new additions:
* DECT Call-in/-out
* Line Hold Music

The event
After the Easterhegg2016 the GPN16 was the second event where we participated as "Chaosvermittlung". The GPN16 was an important mile stone in the development of the Chaosvermittlung. Several new things were developed in preparation for the event or came up there.

* For being able to deploy field telephones in the lecture halls, methods of silencing the phones and the optical bell were created.
* The test of a method to feed external audio into the system with this hardware lead to the line hold music feature, which was very well received.
* The connection to the outer world via the analogue phone lines provided by the POC worked out extremely well. Being able to just pick up the next field phone and getting connected to an arbitrary phone number in the DECT system, is kind of a killer application. We have to promote that feature more prominently in the future.
* Putting "public" field phones in certain places, like the lounge or the smoker corners, resulted in a significant amount of system use for entertainment purposes (fostered by the consume of alcoholic beverages).
* The initial plan to have some kind of tent telephone box outside, morphed into something very different and became a wicked looking umbrella. It still hosted the Russian field phone outside the main door and did its duty in keeping the phone from drowning in the rain.
* The event was also very important in regards of "spreading the virus". We had a nice amount of exposure and new people got interested in the technology. The guys from Nuremberg got very hard hit and have since then become a major part of project Chaosvermittlung, contributing with equipment and manpower.
* At that very event we were also donated a DSLAM, which might result in our service portfolio being extended by some DSL over field wire capabilities.
* We also provided part of the hardware (the wire) for other people who did very interesting experiments. They ran TCP/IP over CAN over field wire!

A tent phone box
It all started as a wild idea. When placing a field phone somewhere outdoor, why not have a style matching phone box around it?

In preparation for GPN16 this looked like a good idea and we made some plans too material with us to build something that could be called a "phone box". Things turned out to be different at the event and part of the material was used to build something different. Out came something that looked more like an umbrella. It still looked "cool" or at least unique and served its purpose of protecting the phone placed beneath it.

To at least get a prove, that the original concept would have worked, the set up was tested at the "Fieldday" 2016 of the local amateur radio club in Regensburg. It did work - but took a _lot_ of time to set up. The roof evolved a little bit further, but the rest was pretty close to the original plan.

Turns out, this is far to much effort to be practical. If we want to do something like that in the future, it has to be easy to set up and not eat up a lot of time. There are some designs of pavilion tents, that might be adapted to be a solution here.

Figures
Equipment used:
* 1x 30-connection exchange
* 1x 10-connection exchange
* 1x Telephone (4-connections) connection box
* about 15 field telephones deployed
* about 400 meter field wire (t.b.c.)

Special Services
Of course there is a field telephone system as such! But we had two new additions:
* DECT Call-in/-out
* Line Hold Music

* The initial plan to have some kind of tent-telephone cell outside, morphed into something very different and became a wicked looking umbrella.

Some people do not like the military connotation, that comes from the look of the equipment due to its previous use in military or emergency service. First attempts have been made to mitigate that, by modifying the appearance of some phones. See for your self:

Figures
Equipment used:
* 1x 30-connection exchange
* 1x 10-connection exchange
* 1x Telephone (4-connections) connection box
* about 15 field telephones deployed
* about 400 meter field wire (t.b.c.)

Special Services
Of course there is a field telephone system as such! But we had two new additions:
* DECT Call-in/-out
* Line Hold Music

* The initial plan to have some kind of tent-telephone cell outside, morphed into something very different and became a wicked looking umbrella.

* 1x 30-connection exchange
* 1x 10-connection exchange
* 1x Telephone (4-connections) connection box
* about 15 field telephones deployed
* about 400 meter field wire (t.b.c.)

* The initial plan to have some kind of tent-telephone cell outside, morphed into something very different and became a wicked looking umbrella.
Just like last year, we attended again at the 33C3 and provided the service of the Choasvermittlung (Chaos Field Phone Exchange). This year we've just brought a little bit more stuff to the congress. This is what has been deployed (there was more...):
* 2 30-connection exchange
* 2 Telephone (4-connections) exchange
* 2 10-connection exchanges dedicated for the Sidechannel
* All in all 20 field telephones (13 borowed and 7 own ones)
* 450 meter backbone (multicore-line with 3-4 twin-wires) and 800 meter field wire

Provided Services
This year we've provided a lot more services than last year:
* DECT Call-in/-out
* Speaking Clock
* Backup GSM Link
* Conference Call
* Line Hold Music

Connected Assemblies
(incomplete list)
* CBase
* AAAAAAAAAA
* Seidenstraße
* Mainframe
* CERT
* Binary Kitchen
* Fablab Nürnberg
